Uploading maps to your virtual table top is a great way to take your game sessions to the next level! If you're wondering how to add a fantasy map or DnD battlemap to Roll20, we've got you covered. It's a simple process and with this guide you'll be adventuring in no time! Here’s how you can import Czepeku maps to Roll20.
Step 1: Choose Your Map
OK, before you do anything, you need to make sure you've got an amazing map. You've been prepping the campaign for longer than you'd admit to your players so you need a battlemap that will do your story justice! We've got you covered. Czepeku has 1,000s of fantasy maps to choose from, each with variations like time of day and different weather effects.
Czepeku Patreon subscribers have full access to their entire library of beautifully crafted maps and scenes. All for just $5 per month. If you’re not a subscriber yet, do your campaign a favour and join here!
We’ve made it super simple to browse all of the maps in our archive here. Whether your adventure is a classic dungeon crawl or you’re looking for something a bit more offbeat (like a Kobold brewery!) we’ve got maps to support all sorts of stories.
Step 2: Create a New Page
- At the top of the screen on your game session, choose the 'Page Toolbar' (little file icon). This will give you a dropdown with an option to 'Create New Page'.
- When you click 'Create New Page' a new page icon will be added to the right of the dropdown box. When you hover over this new page, you'll see some options appear. You can also name your page at this stage by clicking on the word 'Untitled' at the bottom. It will bring up a text box.
- Click on the gear icon to open the 'Page Settings'.
- In the 'Page Settings', set the height and width of the page (in cells) to match the size of your map. You can check that size of your map in the 'zip' file name when you download your Czepeku map.
Step 3: Upload Your Map
When you upload a map to Roll20, you can either import a single map to use in your session, or you can select multiple versions of the same map for variations like day and night, or weather effects. We'll cover both!
Uploading a single map:
- Now click on the 'Art Library' tab on the top of the righthand side panel. Select 'My Library' and 'Upload'. From there you can drag and drop or browse for your map image.
- It's not always super clear that your file has uploaded, but you should see it in your 'Recent Uploads'. You can drag it from there onto the blank page, but remember to click and drag the map name rather than the thumbnail.
- The map will look tiny when it lands on the page. But don't panic! Right-click on the image and hover over 'Advanced'. Click on 'Set Dimensions' and match the map size (measured in cells not pixels).
- You'll need to grab and drag your map to match the corners of your page size. It can help to zoom out when you do this.
- Right-click on the map, choose 'Layer', then click on 'Map Layer'. That will set your map on the page and you can navigate it as usual.
Uploading multiple variations of the same map:
- Just a few icons to the right of the 'Art Library' tab you'll find the 'Collections' tab. Click on that.
- Scroll down to 'Rollable Tables' and choose '+Add'. Click on the newly created table name (probably called 'new-table'). You can rename it here of course.
- In that edit box, click on '+Add' and drag or browse for each variant of the map that you want to import. Then click 'Save' when you're finished.
- Click onto the blank page, then click on 'Token' next to your new table. A small map token will appear on your page.
- Right-click on the token and hover over 'Advanced'.
- To switch between the map variants on your page, right-click and choose 'Multi-Sided' then 'Choose Side'. You will have to choose visually, or based on the order you created the table as the item names don't display.
So that's it! Whether you're using a single map or you want to switch between your variations, if you follow these simple steps you'll have your map uploaded on Roll20 in not time, ready for adventure!
